Central Embedding Problems, the Arithmetic Lifting Property and Tame Extensions of Q

This paper focuses on the following two questions relating to the inverse Galois problem: (1) (Beckmann [2]) Is every finite Galois extension of Q the specialization of a Galois branched covering of P defined over Q and with the same Galois group? (2) (Birch [3]) Given a finite group G, is there a tamely ramified normal extension F/Q with Gal(F/Q) ∼ = G? We obtain affirmative answers to these q...

GENERIC GALOIS EXTENSIONS FOR SL 2 ( F 5 ) OVER Q Bernat Plans

Let Gn be a double cover of either the alternating group An or the symmetric group Sn, and let Gn−1 be the corresponding double cover of An−1 or Sn−1. For every odd n ≥ 3 and every field k of characteristic 0, we prove that the following are equivalent: (i) there exists a generic extension for Gn−1 over k, (ii) there exists a generic extension for Gn over k. As a consequence, there exists a gen...

Geometric families of 4-dimensional Galois representations with generically large images

We study compatible families of four-dimensional Galois representations constructed in the étale cohomology of a smooth projective variety. We prove a theorem asserting that the images will be generically large if certain conditions are satisfied. We only consider representations with coefficients in an imaginary quadratic field. We apply our result to an example constructed by Jasper Scholten ...

On the Minimal Number of Ramified Primes in Some Solvable Extensions of Q

Given a finite group G, let ram(G) (resp. ramt(G)) denote the minimal positive integer such that G can be realized as the Galois group of an extension of Q (resp. a tamely ramified extension of Q) ramified only at ram(G) (resp. ramt(G)) finite primes. The present paper is devoted to study ram(G) and ramt(G), for some solvable groups G. More precisely, we consider the case where G is either a fi...

Modified Proof of a Local Analogue of the Grothendieck Conjecture

A local analogue of the Grothendieck Conjecture is an equivalence of the category of complete discrete valuation fields K with finite residue fields of characteristic p 6= 0 and the category of absolute Galois groups of fields K together with their ramification filtrations. The case of characteristic 0 fields K was considered by Mochizuki several years ago. Then the author proved it by differen...
